Could your Pet Suffer from Seasonal Allergies?

February 13, 2018

Pets can suffer from seasonal allergies as well as food allergies, they display similar symptoms and can cause a great deal of discomfort for your pet.  And as per our vet, allergy related issues appear to be on the rise.

What are Seasonal Allergies?

Winter season allergies can affect dog’s skin, coat, and his breathing. These allergens that occur in the wintertime are usually airborne, which causes the symptoms of sneezing and itchy, watery eyes. Within the home, dust mites and mold, even in very small quantities, are the triggers for these particular symptoms.

Winter Pet Allergy Signs and Symptoms:

  • EARS are red with a waxy drainage that has a bad odor.
  • FACE (muzzle, chin, and eyes) is red with hair loss around the eyes and the nose may run.
  • FEET may develop intense itching, redness, inflammation — brown discoloration of areas which are continuously licked and scratched due to itching.
  • HAIRCOAT of the dog  may develop bald spots and brown discoloration.  The face may be rubbed on furniture and the floor, or the sides and belly of the dog because of itching fur.
  • SKIN appears red with possible crusts and scales on it. Secondary skin infections may develop with strong odors to it. Areas of the belly, groin, and elbows may cause intense itching, causing massive scratching.

Severe allergies and high levels of hypertensity may develop into Anaphylactic Shock, with signs of diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, difficulty in breathing, collapsing, always seek medical treatment from a licensed veterinarian.

How do you Treat for Winter Season Allergies in Pets

Winter season allergies are very treatable under a veterinarian’s care and your veterinarian will assess his/her symptoms and discuss with you the subject of winter allergies and what can cause them and then customize the best treatment plan for your pet.
